In the heart of Franklin Village, right off of the Hollywood Blvd exit on the 101 South, stands a teeny tiny local institution: Locali. Since 2009, Locali has been paving the way in offering ample, delicious vegan options with local, organic ingredients, in a small convenience store setting. It should be noted that this place isn’t 100% vegan. However, in addition to the many vegan options, any deli sandwich can be made vegan with NO EXTRA CHARGE. When was the last time you saw an offer like that on a menu?
Locali takes pride in creating substantial, delicious meals with no refined sugar, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or genetically modified products. The vegan reuben was even voted among the top ten best new sandwiches in Los Angeles by Zagat.
The food is nothing short of mouth watering. Pictured above is my meal: Half vegan Reuben (on a marble rye that blew my mind), heirloom potato salad and a black label kombucha. And Zack’s meal: Half ‘Franklin Phenomenon’ sandwich veganized, a side of chili (which my picky eater couldn’t stop raving about), and a Virgil’s cola. If you’re trying Locali for the first time, I highly recommend their vegan BLT and the Reuben.
Their breakfast menu is no joke either, offered 24 hours a day, you can get a ‘Badass Breakfast Sandwich’ and it’ll transport you back to mornings at McDonald’s from your childhood. (Minus the cruelty and poor food safety standards.)
It’s not just the food that’s green at Locali, the store was built according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), with energy efficient appliances and minimizing waste through composting. Their to-go containers are biodegradable, and almost everything is recycled.
Housing one of the first bitcoin ATM’s in Southern California, Locali is never shy about embracing new technologies and making waves in the marketplace. Check out this article for more info.
With locations in Hollywood, Venice, and the Fashion District of DTLA, Locali is spreading like wildfire. I hope they set up shop in the valley someday soon! I’d be the first in line every morning.
If you ever get a chance to stop by Locali, I really recommend that you do. This little hole in the wall perfectly representative of what I love most about Los Angeles- innovation, environmental efficiency, and high quality local food. Make it a must-see stop on your next trip out to LA, you won’t regret it.
